By Nathaniel Harrington

Shot in Puerto Rico shortly after dawn, this photo captures the odd moment that lingers between night and day. The colors range from the deepest navy of the water to the brightest wispy white of the clouds. The affect is one of Yin and Yang. Darker colors on the left, lighter on the right. Cut through the middle, and backlit by the rising sun, is the curl of a wave in a dazzling, crystalline blue.

Harrington began his day in the dark.  At the first light of dawn, he saw that he and his friends had the waves to themselves; they were alone.  However, with the brightening sky people began to gather in a pack on a nearby peak. It is strange, then, that the presence of others did in no way lessen the feeling of isolation. It only heightened it. The early dawn silhouettes and the vague ring of distant voices only amplified the dream-like quality of that morning.  Conditions were preternaturally perfect, the sky foretold sun, and the waves were powerful, and well-formed. Harrington and the others were alone, but not lonely. And, in that queer time just after dawn, when most people are still in bed with minds between sleep and wakefulness, Harrington could not help but wonder whether he were also dreaming.
